Sugardome II hosted a real pitchers' duel.

In a low-scoring contest between the Detroit Pizzas and the Havana Sugar Kings, Phil Beard, who finished 5th in the AL in ERA with 3.43 last year, proved to be the difference. The Detroit right-hander earned props for his performance in the 1-0 Pizzas win. Beard, the winner, moves to 1-2. He threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 2 walks.

Jay Naylor helped his team jump on top from the get-go. His first time up in the top of the first, he cranked a run-scoring single to give Detroit a 1-0 lead.

In postgame remarks, Naylor hailed his team's "single-minded focus."

The loss has the Sugar Kings at 13-8.
