Downs Smacks 5 Hits for Ducks Sunday, August 25th , 2052 It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-5 day. For many, it might come around only once in a career -- and for Shawn Downs, it came around today. The 18-year-old catcher scattered hits all over Alligators Stadium to pace the 9-8 Long Island Ducks victory over the Jacksonville Alligators. Jacksonville skipper Todd Ward told reporters in the press room that "Downs deserves a hat-tip." "He hit some good pitches against us," he said. "In fact, according to our scouting reports, Downs hit several that he is not supposed to be able to hit." Shawn Downs doubled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th. In 30 games this season, Downs has compiled a .361 batting average with 48 hits and 3 home runs. He has also scored 21 times and knocked in 24 runs. View Boxscore |
