Shirley Gets 5 Hits Sunday, July 17th , 2050 Bret Shirley really sizzled at the plate in his team's 17-7 win over the Santa Clara Vanguard. The Sao Paolo first baseman blistered Santa Clara for 5 hits in 6 at-bats. "Shirley was too tough to get out today," the Vanguard skipper said in the postgame interview. "No matter what we threw him, he hit it. And he hit some good pitches, too." Bret Shirley singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th, hit a two-run double in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
