Velasco Best AL Starter in June Friday, July 1st , 2050 Portland Beavers hurler Victor Velasco was rewarded today with the Alliance League Pitcher of the Month honors. Velasco, 32, realizes that pitching isn't all about how hard you can throw, it's about accuracy and about picking yourself up even when you've had a run of bad luck. "I'd like to say I don't give them anything to hit," said the Portland starter, "but that's not true. Every pitcher gives up a long ball now and then. Usually there's at least one mistake in each at-bat, but you've got to battle through your mistakes and build some positive momentum. The rest will fall into place." Things did fall into place for Velasco. In June he took the ball for 36 innings while notching 37 strikeouts, a 1.75 ERA and a 4-0 record. On the season, Velasco has compiled a 9-1 mark with a 2.79 ERA in 2 starts. In pitching 90.1 innings he has 90 strikeouts and 34 walks while limiting the opposition to a .220 batting average. |
