Hernandez Jacks 3 into the Stands Wednesday, September 25th , 2052 His swing was a thing of beauty. Three times Mario Hernandez swung the bat and three times he delivered a home run. It was an awesome sight to behold at Sugardome II, but to no avail, for as good as he was, the Havana Sugar Kings were better. The Detroit Pizzas couldn't capitalize on the big game from Hernandez and dropped the contest, 9-8. The mood in the Pizzas clubhouse afterward was subdued, with several players remarking that they had allowed the Sugar Kings to spoil the day for Hernandez. "Some of the boys are beating themselves up about it," Detroit manager Evan Compton said. "They know we win as a team and lose as a team, but it's hard to really put that idea into practice on a day when one of you was playing on such an obviously higher level." In addition to the homers, Hernandez collected 5 RBIs and scored 3 runs. "I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," the Detroit left fielder told reporters. "Today I was in a groove. Tomorrow I could just pop the same pitches up and go 0-for-3." Mario Hernandez flied out in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off Fedya Nosov in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Rick Licea in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off Jorge Figueroa in the 8th. This season, Hernandez has 32 home runs and a .275 batting average. |
