In a low-scoring contest between the Detroit Pizzas and the St. Louis Archies, Phil Beard, who finished 5th in the AL in strikeouts with 233 last year, proved to be the difference. The Detroit right-hander earned props for his performance in the 2-1 Pizzas win. In 6.1 innings, Beard surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 4. He allowed 1 run. The loss lowers the St. Louis record to 5-2.

The Pizzas got a big at-bat from left fielder Mike Deaner. For the game, Deaner was 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the third, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Detroit a 2-1 lead.
