The Havana Sugar Kings topped the Detroit Pizzas, 5-4, in Alliance League action at Pizzas Ballpark. The standout performance belonged to Havana pitcher and Bayonne, New Jersey, native Eric McKinney. The winner was McKinney. He threw 6.2 innings allowing 2 runs. The loser was Jim Edmons. Chad Edwards, who is a two-time All-Star, nailed down the save.

Havana used the clutch hitting of Tony Anaya to snag the win. The center fielder drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Sugar Kings ahead, 5-2. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.

"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Anaya. "You've got to get results."

The Sugar Kings raised their record to 59-71.
