Fans watched the Detroit Pizzas and the Portland Beavers fight to the finish.

In a tight affair between the Detroit Pizzas and the Portland Beavers, pitcher Phil Beard was in the zone. The Detroit right-hander helped his team win the game, 2-1. The second-place Pizzas are 60-50.

The Beavers had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Pizzas going into the top of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 24-year old third baseman Chris Hinkle came to the plate. Hinkle hit a solo home run on a 0-2 cutter from Portland hurler Steve Thomas. It was Hinkle's 5th home run of the year.

"Runs were tough to come by," said Hinkle. "But we scored just enough to win."
