Big Day for Irish as Pizzas Down Sugar Kings, 7-3
|
The Detroit Pizzas beat the Havana Sugar Kings, 7-3, at Sugardome II. The Pizzas got a fine performance from third baseman Jason Irish, who went 4-5 with a home run and 3 doubles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. The winning pitcher was Phil Beard. His record now stands at 4-2. The right-hander went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits for the Pizzas. The loss has the Sugar Kings at 16-17.
Curtis Howland had a big 3-run home run for the Pizzas in the top of the first inning. With Detroit leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a fastball from Kwan-wuk Tae, who is tied for 10th in the AL in wins with 3, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Pizzas on top, 5-0.
"It was a good night for them and a bad night for us," said Havana manager The Baron.
