Beavers Squeeze By Waikiki, 3-2
|
Waikiki got a valiant performance from pitcher Bobby Avery, but it wasn't enough to beat the Portland Beavers. Portland won the game, 3-2. Avery threw 7.2 innings of 6-hit ball for the losing team. Tony Orellana sewed up the save, his 5th. The win brings the Beavers to 9-15, an awful start for a team that made the playoffs just last season.
Portland needed the clutch hitting of Gene Dillard to seal the deal. The center fielder swatted a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Beavers on top, 3-2. For the game, Dillard had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"It was a solid team effort," said Dillard after the game.
